The original American Express logo was introduced in 1958 and featured a Roman gladiator, which still appears on the company’s credit cards and travelers’ checks. Today’s logo was introduced in 1975 and features the white and blue block letters of the company name on a blue background.

American Express, also commonly referred to as AmEx, originally started out as a freight forwarding company. Before the concept of credit cards really came about, the company started offering travelers’ checks, which co-founder J.C. Fargo asked his employee Marcellus Flemming Berry to develop. Fargo wanted a solution to a big problem he experienced while traveling in Europe. Although he was president of America Express, which was then a major shipping company, he could not obtain cash outside of major cities even though he had letters of credit.

By 1958, the company got into the credit card business and issued 250,000 cards before the official launch date for the card. Since then American Express has issued a number of different cards, including the Gold Card, the Optima Card, and the Blue card.
