More Info & History on Discover Card Logos

The Discover Card was initially issued in 1985 by Sears. A year later it became a worldwide company. Discover was part of Dean Witter before going over to Morgan Stanley. It became a standalone company in 2007 under the name Discover Financial Services.

Probably the earliest version of the Discover logo features the red and orange “Discover” in all caps across a black background. A white line runs underneath it to separate it from the green panel, which features the Novus name. Although this logo was retired, it is still displayed by many retailers. Today’s Discover Card Logo features the Discover name in black, all caps letters. The O is an orange circle.

The development of the Discover Card itself was unlike the history of Visa and MasterCard. Those two credit card companies began around the same time, and Discover didn’t come onto the scene until decades later. Other companies had tried to create competitors for Visa and MasterCard, but they failed for a variety of reasons. Discover Card likely survived because of its lack of an annual fee, which was uncommon in the company’s early days. It also offered its trademark Cashback Bonus, which returns a percent of users’ purchases back to their account in the form of a credit. Discover recently created a new credit card called the “Discover it Card” which replaces many of their existing cards.
