More About the MasterCard Logo

Unlike the Visa logo, the MasterCard logo has undergone a gradual evolution since the company’s inception. MasterCard’s predecessor was Interbank, which was started in 1966. That logo featured a white lowercase I on a black circle, which was placed on a grey square background.

When the company became MasterCard, the new logo featured the now-recognized red and yellow circles with the words “master charge” emblazoned across it. It also had Interbank’s trademark I in the bottom right-hand corner. Master Charge, which was MasterCard’s business name after Interbank, was created by merging a number of California banks to create a credit network that could compete with Visa, which was then called BankAmericard.

By 1979, The MasterCard logo simply featured the new brand name across the same overlapping red and yellow circles that were in the original logo. In 1997 the company updated its logo again to feature the company’s recognizable overlapping circles but with a small addition—the circles now have stripes in the space where the circles overlap. There is also a corporate logo that was developed in 2006, although it is not used on the cards themselves. The corporate logo shows red and orange circles in the background and then subtly shaded rings over top of the two main circles. It also has the company’s full name, MasterCard Worldwide.
